Christ’s Return

Posted: June 6, 2016 in Basic Training

The Bible speaks of 2 monumental events that are yet to come; the “rapture” of the Church and the physical second coming of Jesus Christ to the earth.

The Rapture

1 Corinthians 15:50-53, 1Thessalonians 4:13-18, Daniel 9:20-27 – These passages speak of the “rapture”, in which Jesus will snatch His Bride from the earth just prior to the 7 year “tribulation”.  The living and the dead will be united with Jesus in the clouds and will spend the 7 year tribulation with Jesus. This final 7 year period of history will culminate in the return of Jesus to the earth with all of His saints where He will reign for 1000 years (Revelation 20:1-6).

The Second Coming

Zechariah 14:4-9, Revelation 19:11-16 –  These passages speak of the day that the Lord Himself will set His foot back on the earth for the second time. Jesus will physically stand on the Mount of Olives, the same place from which He ascended into heaven, and take His rightful place as King of kings and Lord of lords on the earth.

“Since He may come any day, it is well to be ready every day.”

Hudson Taylor

Matthew 24 – In this chapter of Scripture Jesus gives us quite a few details about His second coming. Here are just a few:

  • Jesus will return physically to the earth in a way that cannot be mistaken or misunderstood.  The second coming is not figurative or symbolic, but literal.
  • No one knows the day or the hour of Jesus’ coming.  Jesus will come like a thief in the night at an unexpected time.
  • We are to keep watch and eagerly anticipate His return.

Jesus’ imminent return should motivate us to live our lives with purpose and to serve Him as if the time were short.  Jesus said it is the wicked servant who says his master is staying away a long time and then begins to neglect his fellow servants and waste time with drunkards. Christians are to encourage one another with the hope that we will all one day see Jesus face to face and be with Him for eternity.

Live inside the circle. Be transformed!
